NGĀ HAERENGA
THE JOURNEYS
Karuwhā facilitates haerenga (journeys) to significant sites across Aotearoa New Zealand in relationship with tāngata whenua and assisted by qualified historical narrators.
These places include Waitangi (over Waitangi Day commemorations and He Whakaputanga), East Coast, Tauranga Moana, Ōhope, Taranaki, Waikato/New Zealand War sites and more. The selected locations are places in which the Trust has pre-existing relationships with tāngata whenua and historical knowledge.

As New Zealanders, Waitangi sits at the heart of our identity. It’s where the Treaty was first signed; and it’s home to the people who welcomed New Zealand’s first Christian missionaries. The stories of Waitangi are our stories; they are your stories.
Applications for 2025 will open in September.
He Whakaputanga
Declaration of Independence
27-29 OCTOBER 2024 WAITANGI
Join Te Tii Marae for the annual commemorations of this important declaration signed in 1835. This will include a dawn ceremony service, lots of time with hau kāinga in the wharekai and engaging with kōrero in the wharenui and an optional Treaty Grounds tour.
Registrations will open in July.

Haerenga ki Rēkohu

A very unique opportunity to go to this remote island. A five day haerenga staying at Kōpinga Marae, flying from Wellington or Auckland. This haerenga is dependent on expressions of interest.

Haerenga ki Ōhope 2021
This haerenga immersed us in the stories of Mātaatua waka. We walked on the lands of Ngāti Awa and the influence of Te Kooti. Despite the betrayal of the Crown, and the uneven response of the churches learnt of the visionary hope of Te Kooti who prophesied that the land will be called Beulah, for the Lord is well pleased. We were hosted at Te Maungārongo Marae.
Pūtake o te Riri ki Taranaki 2019
We participated in the National Land Wars Commemorations at Owae Marae, Waitara. A great introduction for our rōpū to these important stories, via kōrero sessions and visits to sites of significance across Taranaki. Our noho was at Parihaka Pā, returning to a kaupapa of maungarongo each night.
Haerenga ki te Tairāwhiti 2020
We had an incredible weekend in Ruatoria at Rauru nui Marae hosted by Pane Kawhia, visiting also Tikitiki and Rangitukia. Our rōpū of 45 was gifted precious stories from hau kāinga including Dr Monty Soutar.
